Romeo and Juliet essay

                                                                   Romeo and Juliet Essay

In the book “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet fall in love. In the story the love is powerful enough to change Romeo’s personality from sad and depressed to social and happy. Romeo’s personality change varies throughout the story from the beginning to the end
In the beginning of the story Romeo is very sad, he doesn’t want to socialize with anyone. He is just moping around as seen in this quote from the text “Tut, I have lost myself. I am not here. This is not Romeo. He is some other where”. This shows that before he fell in love with Juliet, Romeo was anti-social and distant from his friends and family. He doesn’t feel a drive to do anything.
In the middle of the book, after Romeo has fallen in love with Juliet, he has changed since earlier in the story. Now Romeo is social and is hanging out with his friends, and isn’t secluded from society. Romeo is more outgoing as shown by this piece of the text “for Mercutio’s soul is but a little above our heads, stying for thine to keep him company. Either thou, or I, or both, must go with him”. Romeo chases down Tybalt with intent to kill him, because Tybalt had killed Mercutio. In the beginning of the story Romeo would not have done the same thing as he did later, showing that falling in love has changed him.
At the end of the story Romeo, does something extremely drastic, that he would not have done had he never met Juliet. Romeo believes Juliet is dead, and thinks he can’t live without her. Romeo kills himself because he can’t be with Juliet anymore. This piece of evidence from the text proves that Romeo kills himself because he believes Juliet to be dead “Here’s to my love, O true apothecary, thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die”. In the beginning Romeo doesn’t want to do anything or be with anyone and by the end of the story, he’s killing himself over one girl. This is a drastic change from the beginning of the story.

In conclusion, Romeo falling in love with Juliet caused his personality to change. In the beginning of the story, Romeo is sad and depressed and isn’t very social. In the middle of the story, Romeo has already fallen in love with Juliet and he has become social. He was hanging out with his friends and Romeo become outgoing enough to kill someone, because they killed his friend. At the end of the story, Romeo goes as far as to end his life, because he can’t be with this one girl. All these points show how Romeo has changed since falling in love with Juliet.

Non-Fiction Thing

I read an article called " New Worries About Heading The Soccer Ball" by:  Gretchen Reynolds. It was about if when players head the ball in soccer [which is when they hit the ball with their head] if it affects their brain.
It was difficult for scientists to test this before because it was hard to collect data immediately after player    had headed the ball. Also some of the stuff needed to collect the data was lab based. But then the iPad came out which was very portable and easy to use.
Scientists went to a high school and watched a female soccer team practice. They chose a female soccer team because female soccer teams are second to football in number of concussions. They watched the soccer team and immediately after made them do the anti-point test. The anti-point test is a test where there are 4 different colored boxes that form a square. A random box lights up and you have to press the box immediately opposite the lit up box. This tests the brains ability to asses the situation and take action.
They tested a group of the soccer girls immediately after practice and a group of non soccer players after a full day of school. The soccer players scored significantly worse on the anti-point test than the non soccer players. Then the scientists asked the soccer players how many years they had been playing soccer. The girls who had been playing soccer the longest scored worse on the anti-point test than the girls who had been playing for a shorter period of time.

My thoughts on this are that it would make sense that heading a ball would have effect on your brain's ability. Years of repeated impacts on the head. I would be surprised if there was no effect.

Non Fiction Response

I read an article called "Arkansas Adopts Strictest Abortion Law in the U.S." by Erik Eckholm
The article talked about how Arkansas passed a law that bans abortions after 12 weeks into the pregnancy. 12 weeks is when a fetus's heartbeat can first be detected. This law was passed by the republican controlled legislative and passed it over a veto by governor Mike Beebe. This is half of the law set by the supreme court which was 24 weeks.
Republicans related abortion to the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide, because of the 50 million abortions each year. Also anti-abortionists argued that after 20 weeks that a fetus can feel pain. The 12 week ban is within the first trimester of pregnancy and one woman said " It has no chance of surviving in federal court"
Me personally, I am pro choice. I believe if someone doesn't want to have a child, then that is their choice and people should not make their decisions for them. I hope this law gets taken down in court. The fact that anti-abortionists related abortion to the holocaust, to me is absurd.
In the holocaust 17 people were brutally murdered by racist Nazis. With abortion fetuses are not born. In my eyes fetuses are not people yet, they have not been born, they are not in the census.
I hope anti-abortion laws get taken away completely and don't think this is fair.

Non-Fiction Reading Response

I read an article called " Hockey Player: What doesn't kill you..." by Chris Rumble
It was a story about this guy who found out he had cancer. The article was told from the guys point of view, they didn't say the guys name, so i'll refer to him as Mike.
Mike said that the strength he found while in the hospital with cancer is what got him through it. He would be visited in the hospital by children who also had cancer and he said that they would get him out of bed, even when he thought he couldn't. He would walk with them and said that they had more courage then he did. At one point his fever spiked and his blood pressure dropped, which is not a good combination for someone with a low immune system, but he kept fighting and eventually those numbers turned around and he walked out of the ICU.
This article hit home for me, someone in my family just beat the fight with cancer, and judging by how hard it was for the people that were close to her, I can't even imagine how hard it must be to go through that. It must be just so emotionally draining and tough on you, I don't know how anyone could go through that alone. So reading this article brought up personal feelings, and memories.

Non-Fiction Article

I read an article called "'American Sniper' Author Shot to Death in Texas" by Micheal Shwirtz. It was about a man named Chris Kyle, who was an American sniper in the Navy SEALs.  Chris Kyle was shot to death at a shooting range in Texas by a veteran named Eddie Ray Routh. Chris Kyle has been called the most lethal sniper in American U.S history. He has over 150 confirmed kills in his career and has saved even more lives. After serving in the war, he created the FITCO Cares Foundation which provides veterans with exercise equipment and helps them to transition back in to civilian life.  He was working a veteran name Eddie Routh who he brought to an exclusive shooting range for the purpose of helping Eddie Routh in his transition.  His efforts backfired however, when Mr. Routh turned on him and fatally shot him as well as his colleague.

In my opinion, it is unfortunate that Chris Kyle, whose actions and intentions were to ultimately save lives and help people, was killed as a result of his good intentions. Some may believe it is not wise judgement to put a troubled veteran in an environment with guns.  Many may feel  he put himself and others in a dangerous situation.  It seems however, that the program has been beneficial to many others and Chris Kyle was willing to take the risk if it meant helping the veterans.

Critical Thinking Question #4

Question: What really hard things are happening in the book?  Are they happening in the world?

I just finished To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The main issue throughout the whole book is racism. Throughout the book Scout's father Atticus is appointed to be Tom Robinson's lawyer. Tom Robinson is a black man in Maycomb county in Alabama. At school Scout and her older brother Jem are made fun of because their father is Tom Robinson's lawyer. The children at school call their father a black lover, except it wasn't the word "black". It is in constant conversation of how Atticus is the lawyer for Tom Robinson all around town. Then later in the book, Tom Robinson is at trial and accused of rape. The trial continues and all the evidence points towards *SPOILER* Mayella Ewell's(the girl who claimed to have been raped) father of comitting the crime, and there was no solid evidence against Tom Robinson. The jury goes to discuss, and they come back with the decision that Tom is guilty.

This part really showed the racism to me. There was obviously bias towards Tom being guilty. Even though there was virtually no solid evidence against Tom Robinson, he was still put in prison for life, for a crime he didn't commit and shouldn't have been convicted of doing.

Yes, as much as we don't like to admit it, racism is still a issue in today's world. It shouldn't be, but it is. People are still prejudice against certain races. It just doesn't make any sense to me, why would your race be any better than any other race. You think you are better, why because you think your religion is better or just the premise of thinking you are better than someone because you SKIN is a different color. To me the whole idea of racism is absurd. I know I kind went off on a rant, at the end but  there is racism in the book and in real life.
